Auditions: Night 2

You are invited to audition for the Kent County Theatre Guild’s presentation of The Beauty Queen of Leenane at the Patchwork Playhouse.

Synopsis

In this darkly comic Irish tale, 40-year-old spinster Maureen Folan is good and stuck in the house she grew up in, caring for her aging mother, Mag. Mag is a nightmare and their mutual antagonism hits a new level when Maureen's first, and possibly final, chance at love suddenly appears. Who’s most vulnerable? Who’s scheming the most? Who’s crazy? Is anyone? The laughably dysfunctional relationship of these two isolated souls in rural Ireland comes to a boiling point when the possibility of romance, or even survival, sets in motion a train of tragically funny yet heartbreaking events.

Character Descriptions

MAUREEN FOLAN, about 40, plain, spinster. Spent some time in a mental institution. Feels trapped in her life and resentful of being her mother’s caretaker.

MAG FOLAN, about 70, Maureen’s mother, stout but frail. Her left arm is badly injured. Dependent on her daughter to take care of her. Very Catholic and lives in old world Catholic beliefs.

PATO DOOLEY, about 40, good looking man, from Leenan but works in London most of the time as a laborer. Smitten with Maureen at first sight.

RAY DOOLEY, about 20, Pato’s younger brother, from Leenan. Enjoys doing anything but adulating. Does not want to play errand boy for family, but begrudgingly goes to the Folan household whenever it is needed.
